Christian Cano sent waves through the political world in 2016 when their campaign efforts were just single digits away from a huge upset. He received national attention for his efforts and as a result the 9th district is now on the map for 2018.
When Christian moved to Charlotte in 2013 he became very active in the political scene. He participated in the Moral Monday marches, led by Rev. William Barber, and became a member of ActionNC. There he participated in the Climate March in New York and a trip to DC to fight for undocumented immigrants and the idea to run for elected office first appeared, as he saw the need for those who had their voices repressed to be heard. When it became clear that Robert Pittenger would run unopposed as he did in 2014, Christian had the courage to challenge him. He brought his experience of hospitality and service to the electoral process, knowing that Pittenger had to go. Though he came up 8 points short of making incredible history by being the first American from the LGBT community that is of Latino heritage elected to congress, the fight continues. Because of what Christian did in 2016 and having spent over two years traveling and meeting neighbors, the district is now being targeted to be flipped in 2018 and his campaign to bring hospitality, service, and courage back to congress is closer than ever to victory.
He currently lives in South Charlotte with his family and their three dogs and attends Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He is originally from Ft. Worth, Texas. He attended Texas Christian University and would go on to spend over twenty years in the hotel industry with his own consulting company. He would open and manage several deluxe hotels across the country. It was there he developed his skill-set for hospitality and service and his leadership helped him to create a trademarked training program that redefined customer service in the industry.
